Founded by former Black Sabbath members, Badlands’ glam metal music became highly popular while they were heavily inspired by Led Zeppelin. With over 100 million records sold, KISS is one of the biggest rock bands of all time. So far, they have released more than 25 albums and have been rocking since 1973. With the success of other hair bands like W.A.S.P., The L.A. Guns, and, later, Faster Pussycat and Poison, the Strip was soon teeming with aspiring glam rock stars and their adoring fans. Strip record stores like Licorice Pizza and Tower Records became important social gathering places for stars and teenage star-gazers alike. Between 1983 and 1986, “heavy metal” – as it was called before the distinction was made between the bands who played to angry young male crowds versus those who catered to the young women in attendance – ruled the world. We already mentioned Motley Crue, but they deserve to truly be hailed the kings of hair metal.
A good number of the band's catalog featured songs about sex, debauchery, and good times — perhaps more unabashed than any other on the Sunset Strip. However, it matured a bit musically with its sophomore effort, Wake Me When It's Over (1989), the group's most commercially successful album that featured the hit ballad "House of Pain." Dokken probably should have been a bigger band within the hair metal genre than it was, mainly because guitarist George Lynch and bassist Jeff Pilson are actually good musicians. The band was even nominated for the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 1989. Lynch doesn't necessarily consider Dokken a full-blown hair/glam metal band, but he certainly had the coif to fit in.

Van Halen found success early, but Quiet Riot floundered for nearly eight years, later landing a recording contract that would only release their music in Japan until, finally, their career-making album, Metal Health, arrived in 1983. It was the first heavy metal album that went No.1 on the Billboard charts and it would change the Sunset Strip, music, the hairspray industry, and spandex production forever. This is especially true in these troubled times, when the multi-coloured, care-free world of hair metal band can be seen as an antidote to boredom and darkness.

In Europe, Hanoi Rocks mixed glam rock, punk and the big hair and makeup of vocalist Michael Monroe. The Finnish band got their start in the late '70s and quickly rose through the ranks. Big hooks, melodic choruses, and the ever-popular "monster ballad" typify the genre. Guitars are also very prominent, with nearly every song having at least one guitar solo. Oblivious to the people below, Keith Richards and Keith Moon supposedly threw TVs off the balcony, while John Bonham pelted cars with water balloons and champagne bottles. At the very end of the 80’s, were there any more exciting tunes than Doghouse or Too Much T-Bone? Quiet Riot's reign of success only lasted a few years, and they had a lot of lineup changes and a couple of breakups. They still toured until recently, when vocalist Kevin DuBrow died of a drug overdose in 2007.
Formed in 1983, White Lion was one of the top hair metal bands through the 80s, and for good reason. Led by the Danish vocalist Mike Tramp, they were the epitome of glam metal at the time. They started off with the shock factor with their rock concerts and are known as the group fronted by Gene Simmons. Known for songs such as I Was Made For Lovin’ You and Crazy Crazy Nights, they were one of the top hair metal bands ever. Their over-the-top concerts and huge stage personas inject so much energy into their music that you cannot stop getting out your air guitar and playing along. Before Mark Slaughter had his 15 or 20 minutes with his own band, he fronted one of the more underrated hair metal groups founded by former Kiss guitarist Vinnie Vincent. VVI released just two albums, its self-titled 1986 project featuring one-time Journey frontman Robert Fleischman on vocals and 1988's All Systems Go with Slaughter at the mic. It was the latter that garnered mainstream attention thanks to the combination of Slaughter's unique voice and Vincent's solid guitar work on tracks like "Love Kills" and "That Time of Year." Like most of the bands on this list, W.A.S.P., in its current form, still pops up in bars, festivals, and local parks. In the 1980s, it was one of the more creative and conceptually visual bands on the hair metal scene. Led by bassist/guitarist/vocalist Blackie Lawless, W.A.S.P. infused some macabre into its live sets and interesting costume choices.
The hair spray, makeup, and catchy pop tunes touched up with distortion were made for MTV. Scene, but don't necessarily fall under the hair metal banner because of the edginess of their earlier music. The Runaways were an all-female band known for their funky metal music in the 70s. It also led to Lita Ford breaking out on her own after they split in the latter part of that decade. Intoxicating with their approach to the metal scene, Ford is now a rock goddess thanks to her outstanding guitar skills that will get you up and rocking. This rock band was formed in 1977, and its popularity peaked in the late 80s thanks to two different records, Once Bitten and Twice Shy, which launched them to stardom.
And if you dig beyond Motley Crue, Ratt and Bon Jovi, there's still plenty of brilliance to be found amongst the scene's lesser lights. They didn't become popular for a few more years, but when they did, their stripped-back sound and nonchalant sense of style (or lack thereof) highlighted how exaggerated and commercialized hair metal really came to be. The party was over, and people were looking for a fresh, new sound. But once this new style, which became known as "grunge" took over, the same thing happened to that scene, as it did years after that with nu-metal. They often say that music is cyclical, and this was certainly the case with hair metal.
In 1984, drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley was killed in a car accident (the car was driven by Motley Crue's Vince Neil). Their status as a true "hair band" is disputed by some, but there's no doubt they greatly influenced the genre and should be considered pioneers. Their distinct dark sound allowed them to cross over when hair metal came to an end.
